Sewer Line Repair vs Replacement: How to Decide (and What It Costs)

Start with the camera — always

Nobody should quote you a sewer repair without showing you camera footage of the defect and locating it on the surface. If someone proposes an excavation before that, get a second opinion. The footage tells you three things that determine everything: where the problem is, how much of the line is affected, and what condition the rest of it is in.

The three options

Spot repair (excavate and replace one section). Dig down at the located defect, cut out the bad section, replace it, backfill and restore. Right when: there's one clearly defined defect — a crushed section, a single bad offset, a localised collapse — and the camera shows the rest of the line is sound. Trade-off: lowest cost, but it's excavation, so there's surface restoration to deal with.

Pipe lining (cured-in-place, CIPP). A resin-saturated liner is pulled or inverted into the existing pipe and cured, forming a new jointless pipe inside the old one. Right when: the host pipe is structurally intact but has multiple root entry points, degraded joints, or general deterioration along the run. Trade-off: no trench, minimal surface disruption, and it eliminates root entry entirely — but it costs more per metre than a spot repair, requires a host pipe sound enough to line, and slightly reduces internal diameter. Full replacement. Excavate the run and install new pipe. Right when: the line has collapsed, has multiple serious defects along its length, has a significant belly that needs re-grading (lining does not fix a belly — it lines the belly), or is deteriorated to the point where repairs aren't credible. Trade-off: highest cost and most disruption, but you get a new line with a full service life.

The honest decision framework

Camera shows one defect, rest of line sound → Spot repair.

Camera shows roots at multiple joints, pipe otherwise intact → Lining.

Camera shows belly holding standing water → Excavate and re-grade — lining won't fix it.

Camera shows multiple cracks and offsets along the run → Replacement.

Camera shows collapse → Replacement.

Camera shows roots but no structural damage → Neither — clean it and set a maintenance interval.

That last scenario matters. A great many homeowners are quoted a replacement for a line that needs cutting, jetting and an annual clean. Roots alone are not an automatic replacement.

Costs

Sewer work ranges enormously with depth, length, access, surface restoration, whether the City connection is involved, and whether the run is under a driveway, a mature tree or a garage. We quote after a camera inspection so you get a firm number based on what's actually in the ground. What you should insist on regardless: camera footage of the defect, the located position and depth marked, a written scope, and a clear statement of what surface restoration is and isn't included.
