Sewer Backup in Your Basement? Do These 7 Things First

A sewer backup is a contamination event, not a plumbing inconvenience. What you do in the first fifteen minutes materially changes what it costs you.

Step 1: Stop using every drop of water in the building

No flushing, no showers, no dishwasher, no laundry, no taps. Everything you send down goes into a line that cannot take it and comes straight back into your basement. Tell everyone in the house immediately — this is the single most important step.

Step 2: Keep people and pets off the affected floor

This is Category 3 water: it carries bacteria and pathogens. No bare feet, no children, no pets, no "just grabbing something."

Step 3: Cut power to the affected area if you can do it safely

If water is anywhere near outlets, cords, a furnace or a hot water tank, shut those circuits off at the panel — only if you can reach the panel without standing in water. If you cannot, leave it and call an electrician or Manitoba Hydro.

Step 5: Photograph everything before you touch anything

Wide shots of the room, close shots of the water line on the walls, every affected item, and the floor drain itself. Insurers ask for this and memory will not cut it. Do it before any cleanup starts.

Step 6: Move what you can, safely

Lift undamaged belongings to a higher floor. Get anything porous — cardboard, upholstery, mattresses, rugs — out of the water if it is safe to do so, since porous materials contaminated with sewage usually cannot be salvaged.

Step 7: Call your insurer once the source is stopped

Ask specifically whether you have sewer backup coverage — in Manitoba it is frequently an add-on rather than standard. Give them the photos, our invoice and the camera footage.

What not to do

Do not run a shop vac on sewage without proper protection. Do not pour bleach down the floor drain hoping to fix it — it does nothing to a blockage and makes the environment worse for whoever opens that line. Do not start tearing out drywall before your insurer has seen it. Do not assume it is over once the water drains away; the cause is still in the line.
